Your NHS is open

Apr 30, 2020

A new Scottish Government campaign is underway to encourage people to seek medical help for health issues which are not related to coronavirus (COVID-19).

Figures indicate patients are delaying going to their GP surgery or Accident and Emergency during the pandemic, that there has been a drop in urgent suspected cancer referrals, and a reduction in families bringing children for immunisation.

Reasons may include wishing to reduce the strain on the NHS, or concerns over becoming infected with COVID-19, as well as the misconception that doctors do not want to see patients.

The ‘NHS is Open’ campaign urges people to contact their GP practice, call 111 out-of-hours or 999 for an emergency.

Calum Campbell, NHS Lanarkshire Chief Executive said: “NHS Lanarkshire is open and it is safe. We have had to change how we deliver services and your appointments may feel a bit different – these may now be phone calls or video consultations. But if people need to be seen face-to-face, then it will still happen.

“Our Accident and Emergency departments are open and our immunisation programmes are continuing as normal. I would like to thank the public for their continued support in appropriately dealing with minor injuries and illnesses through NHS24 and local pharmacies. This has meant that our Accident and Emergency departments can focus on the patients who need them most.

“If you are concerned about a potential cancer sign or symptom, don’t delay contacting your GP practice. It’s best to get checked, as the earlier cancer is found the easier it is to treat. We want to hear from anyone who has an urgent medical problem.”

Health Secretary Jeane Freeman said: “It is vital for people to know that GP surgeries and hospitals are still there for them if needed.

“While we appreciate the public doing all they can to reduce the strain on our NHS at this challenging time, if people have serious health concerns or symptoms, it’s just as important as ever to seek immediate medical assistance.”

Look out for the campaign on TV, radio and social media.

Case study – South Lanarkshire Councillor Julia Marrs urges people not to wait to get healthcare advice (in her own words)

“Exactly one year ago on 30 April I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The lump was small, soft and oblong, and I’ll be honest I wasn’t sure whether to bother the doctor, after all, I was approaching my mid-forties, I wouldn’t be the first woman to have fatty bits appear at that certain age. But even though I wasn’t worried, even though I was busy with work, even though it would have been easier not to face the possibility of a life threatening illness, I went to get it checked out, and I’m very glad I did.

“It was a fast growing aggressive tumour, and a little over a month later I was in surgery and heading for chemotherapy. If I had waited weeks or even months before seeking an investigation, the outcome could have been very different. As it is, early detection and treatment means I am well, recovering from chemo and coping well with preventative therapies.

“But I can relate to those reluctant to ‘bother the doctor’, and can understand concerns over COVID-19. It’s true that some cancer treatments which impact your immunity are delayed for just now, but many other therapies, mine included, continue and are administered safely and at home. The NHS is open for non COVID-19 issues.

“If you notice any change, in your breast or any other part of your body, please do go your GP. As with any life-threatening illness, there can be no waiting, even in these times, early detection and treatment are critical to your recovery.”
