NHS Lanarkshire has welcomed a number of final year nursing and medical students to help in the fight against COVID-19.
Among the group are year 3 student midwives from the University of the West of Scotland – Melissa Scott, Paige Jones and Karen Stirling who have joined the maternity team at University Hospital Wishaw. The will be working clinically until the end of August while also completing theoretical components of their degree. They will then qualify as midwives in September.
Also from the University of the West of Scotland is a group of year 3 nurses who have joined the emergency care area at University Hospital Wishaw.
Twenty seven foundation year 1 doctors from universities across Scotland and England have joined us and will be working in non-covid areas including medicine, surgery and care of the elderly. They’ve been through an intensive two-day induction and are now out on the wards.
The medical students join us from University of Glasgow, The University of Edinburgh, University of Dundee and The University of Manchester. Of the students, 18 of them will be joining NHS Lanarkshire in August as part of the normal intake and the others have kindly volunteered their time in an area close to their homes.
Dr Ian Hunter, Director of Medical Education, said: “We would like to welcome everyone who has joined NHS Lanarkshire to assist during the current situation. We have been truly humbled by their determination and willingness to contribute to the care we provide.”
