Speech & Language Therapy

What we do

Speech and Language Therapy provides treatment, support and care for adults who have difficulties with communication, or with eating, drinking and swallowing.

Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) work across North and South Lanarkshire to improve the lives of people affected by communication and swallowing difficulties. Our Adult service team work with people from 18 years of age.

We support people across a wide range of setting including in acute hospitals, Health Centre clinics, Care Homes and in people’s own homes.

We support people living with a wide variety of conditions including Stroke, Motor Neurone Disease(MND), Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Stammering, Head and Neck cancer and Voice difficulties.

  • We help people to communicate as effectively as possible
  • We help people to eat and drink safely
  • We support carers and families to support individuals with communication and swallowing difficulties
  • We support individuals to self-manage.
  • We support people with Head and Neck cancer before and after treatment
  • We change speech valves for people who have had a laryngectomy.
  • We help people care for their voice
  • We provide training in communication and swallowing to health and care staff
  • We provide resources for professionals working with people who have communication and/or swallowing difficulties
  • We welcome feedback from all people who have accessed our service via Care Opinion

How to submit a Request for Assistance to Speech and Language Therapy

Acute

All Requests for Assistance should be ordered on Trakcare – Acute SLT Request for Assistance.

Community

We accept Requests for Assistance directly to our service using Request for Assistance form. Email your form to the specific inbox for your area – for area emails see our contact details below. We accept Requests for Assistance from patients and their families/carers.

We also accept Requests for Assistance through internal referral on Winvoice Web.

If you work in a Care Home and are looking for advice on swallowing issues, please consult Swallowing Matters resource and follow the advice and flow chart within.

If you have had a laryngectomy and you need a valve change, please call or text the valve booking number on 07976 320529.

What your appointment will look like and how to get ready for it

On your first visit, you may be asked about your present medical condition, your past medical history, any medicines that you are taking and about how your communication and swallowing difficulties are affecting your daily life.

You will be assessed and you will jointly agree your goals and the next steps with your therapist about your future treatment that may include advice and /or regular therapy.

Your visit will usually last 30-60 minutes. A relative or friend is welcome to accompany you.

Attending an out-patient appointment

You will receive a letter or telephone call advising the date and time of your appointment in the locations below.

  • University Hospital Hairmyres

    The Speech and Language Therapy department is based in the Rehabilitation department. The entrance is to the right of the main entrance.

  • Blantyre LIFE Hub

    Access through the main entrance and check in at main reception.

  • University Hospital Wishaw

    The Speech and Language Therapy department is based in the Rehabilitation department. The entrance is to the right of the main entrance.

Attending a Videofluoroscopy Appointment

The Videofluoroscopy clinic is run by Specialist Speech and Language Therapists and takes place in the X-ray department of the hospital specified in your appointment letter.

Receiving a home visit

Your Speech and Language Therapist will contact you by letter or telephone to arrange to visit you at home.

Attending a Video Appointment

We use the NHS Lanarkshire video platform called Near Me. This can be accessed through the NHS Lanarkshire website or by using the link sent to you by your therapist when arranging your appointment.
