ABOUT

What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that promotes the health and wellbeing of all.

Physiotherapists are responsible for the assessment and physical rehabilitation of those needing treatment due to accident, injury, ageing, disease or disability.

What is paediatric physiotherapy?

Paediatric physiotherapy is the treatment and care of babies, children and young people from birth to 19 years.

Paediatric physiotherapists bring their generic skills as physiotherapists and have additional knowledge and experience of child development and of childhood disabilities.

What do paediatric physiotherapists do?

First we carry out an assessment and then offer a plan to suit the needs of the child.

This may include regular input or advice on exercises, play activities and handling your child. We may offer to provide equipment that may help your child.

We work closely with the family, other health professionals, educational staff and others who may be involved with the child.

Our aim is to find ways to help the child make the most of their abilities.

We see children in their own homes, schools, nurseries and clinics, whichever is most convenient.

Some conditions that we can help with include:

  • Walking problems
  • Coordination problems
  • Developmental delay
  • Neonatal care
  • Neurological conditions e.g. Cerebral Palsy, Head Injury
  • Congenital Conditions and syndromes e.g. Spina Bifida, Down’s Syndrome
  • Orthopaedic conditions e.g. Talipes, Torticollis, Plagiocephaly, Erb’s Palsy
  • Neuromuscular disorders e.g. Muscular Dystrophy
  • Respiratory conditions e.g. Cystic Fibrosis
  • Rheumatological Conditions e.g. Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
  • Acute injuries e.g. post fracture, muscular or ligament sprains

Musculoskeletal referrals will be accepted for children up to the age of 14.

Please contact any of the departments if you require any further information about making a referral.

Please fill in as many of the parts of the form as possible and send to your nearest department. You can also email your referral form to childphysio.lanarkshire@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk
