Salus Occupational Health, Safety & Return to Work Services

SALUS is the name of the Occupational Health, Safety and Return to Work service owned and operated by NHS Lanarkshire.

Our service is here to provide evidence based information, advice, help and support to you on matters related to health, work and wellbeing.  We have a multidisciplinary team made up of Specialist Occupational Health Physicians and Nurse Advisors, Health and Safety Specialists, PaMOVA Tutors and Moving and Handling Advisers; all of which are supported by our Administrative staff.

As a service, SALUS actively supports the health and wellbeing of our staff primarily through the Staff Health and Wellbeing Strategy Group, as well as being a key stakeholder to the NHS Lanarkshire Board and in collaboration across the organisation with our partners.

We keep a confidential Occupational Health (OH) record on all staff members in a system completely separate from normal medical records, which only OH staff have access to.  We are very aware of the need to provide a trusted and confidential service.

Management Referrals

The management referral process allows managers to request employees to be assessed by an Occupational Health clinician regarding their functional ability and fitness in relation to work.  This referral should be completed following discussion and agreement between the manager and the employee. Referrals can be completed for a number of reasons including, but not limited to:

  • Long term absence
  • Short term intermittent absence where there may be an underlying cause
  • If there is reason to believe a health problem may be impairing performance
  • Mental Health issues including anxiety or depression
  • Staff welfare reasons
  • Alcohol or substance misuse
  • Where it is believed a staff member may have an occupational disease, be at risk from work activity or pose a risk to others due to a health problem

Following referral, Salus will organise an appointment, carry out a consultation and following consent from the staff member, will aim to provide the referring manager with a report within 15 working days from receipt of the referral. The staff member will be offered a copy of the report either before it is sent to the manager or at the same time.

How to Access:

The manager will complete a management referral document – further information and the form can be found here http://firstport2/staff-support/salus-occupational-health-and-safety/occupational-health/mr/Pages/default.aspx.

Once the contents of the form has been discussed with the employee and completed fully by the manager, it can be attached and forwarded to the referral hub email at salus.referrals@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk.
