Assessment Process

About the assessment process

The assessment process can look different for each child who enters our service. This is because we treat each child or young person as an individual with their own unique strengths and challenges. This means the length of time it takes for the assessment process to be completed is different for each child. We aim to provide a holistic and thorough assessment of each child meaning the process may take a number of weeks.

It is important that everybody involved in this process, including parents/carers, education colleagues, and the young person is an active participant. This includes attending all appointments, completing and returning forms and providing any relevant information requested. We are unable to complete a formulation without this information. If there are any challenges to completing forms, for any reason, please let us know.

What assessments will include

The majority of assessments include:

  • Initial conversation telephone call
  • Clinic appointment(s) for direct assessment of your child/young person
  • Questionnaires
  • School visit, report and/or a conversation with their teacher(s)
  • Feedback to discuss the outcome of the assessment
  • A diagnostic report
