Money Counts: Worrying About Money?
Aim:
Sessions are designed to increase the knowledge and confidence of participants on raising the issue of financial worries and where to refer/signpost people to, for further support. It also gives participants a greater understanding of the impact of financial insecurity on a person’s overall health and social wellbeing.
Session covers the following topics:
Poverty, health inequalities, social determinants of health, sources of support, referral pathways
Learning Objectives:
- Increase understanding of poverty and its impacts
- Increase confidence to ask about money worries
- Increase knowledge of support services for money matters
Target Audience:
Staff and volunteers across the health and social care sector in North and South Lanarkshire.

Tackling Poverty: Everyone’s Business – Routine Enquiry of Finances
Aim:
This session aims to build the capacity of staff within NHS Lanarkshire and the health and social care partnerships, to confidently raise the issue of money worries with their patients or staff.
It also aims to increase awareness of, and access to, referral pathways and related supports and advice that are available locally to help people to maximise their income and reduce the impacts of the cost of living.
Learning Objectives:
- Increase understanding of poverty, health inequalities and its impact
- Increase confidence to ask about money worries
- Increase knowledge and confidence to refer patients or staff to the Tackling Poverty Team (North) or Money Matters Advice Service (South)
Session covers the following topics:
Poverty, health inequalities, social determinants of health, supports available, referral pathways
Target Audience:
All staff groups with a patient facing or staff management role. Particular focus on services that support children, young people and their families.
Duration:
30, 60 or 90 minutes – flexible depending on needs of the team
Delivery Method:
Face to face is preferred but can be delivered over Microsoft Teams. Refresher sessions are also available for teams who have previously received training or would like an update.

Public Health Scotland – Child Poverty Learning Hub
Aim:
Child poverty is a big problem in Scotland. Child poverty is not inevitable and a combination of the right actions at national and local level can reduce child poverty.
Working through this hub will help staff in local areas develop an awareness of child poverty and prompt them to think about actions that address child poverty.
Learning Objectives:
- Provide an overview of child poverty in Scotland
- Raise awareness of the drivers of child poverty and the population groups at higher risk
- Describe the impact of child poverty
- Outline key actions to address child poverty
Target Audience:
The hub is aimed at staff in public services that come into contact with families and children and anyone working to improve outcomes for children and families.
Duration:
The hub is made up of 5 sections. We recommend you start with the Overview of child poverty in Scotland and the Drivers of child poverty sections. These sections will provide context for the other sections.
The hub is designed to be flexible so you can dip in and out of each of the sections.
