Ask, Tell: Save a Life

Aim:

To inform everyone about mental health and the prevention of suicide so that they may be able to promote good mental health, respond to distress and help people seek help.

Learning Objectives

Animation 1- Ask, Tell, Look After Your Mental Health

  1. Identify ways to support people to have good mental health
  2. Be familiar with ways you can look after your own mental health
  3. Have an awareness of situations that can negatively affect our mental health
  4. Demonstrate an awareness of the prevalence of mental health problems
  5. Have an understanding of the wider issues that affect people accessing support for their mental health
  6. Be familiar with the risk of re-attempt associated to previous suicide attempt
  7. Demonstrate an awareness of the prevalence of mental health problems
  8. Demonstrate an awareness of the prevalence of suicide
  9. Identify what to do when you are worried about someone’s mental health

Animation 2- Have a healthy conversation

  1. Recognise the signs that someone might be in distress or considering taking their own life
  2. Demonstrate an awareness of the risk associated with a sudden improvement in mood or calmness
  3. Explain what being ALERT means
  4. An ability to identify ways to start holding a healthy conversation
  5. Understand the importance of being non-judgemental and of not minimising the persons experience
  6. Be familiar with ways you can help by listening

Animation 3- Ask, Tell, Save a Life

  1. Describe how to talk openly about suicide
  2. Recognise your role in suicide prevention
  3. Demonstrate awareness of the prevalence of suicide rates in Scotland
  4. Understand the risks associated with previous suicide attempt
  5. Demonstrate an awareness of some of the reason someone may cut or harm themselves
  6. Understand the risk of suicide associated with previous self- harm
  7. Describe what to do when someone is struggling with poor mental health or feeling suicidal
  8. Be familiar with what to do if someone tells you they have an immediate suicide plan

Target Audience:

The training is in its pilot stage & is delivered to targeted groups.

Duration:

2 hours.

Scottish Mental Health First Aid (SMHFA)

Aim:

  • To preserve life.
  • To provide help to prevent the mental health problem or crisis developing into a more serious state.
  • To promote the recovery of good mental health.
  • To provide comfort to a person experiencing distress.
  • To promote understanding of mental health issues.

Learning Objectives

  1. Know how to apply the 5 steps of MHFA
  2. Know how to respond if you believe someone is at risk of suicide.
  3. Know how to give immediate help until professional help is available.
  4. Know what to say and do in a crisis
  5. Understand the importance of good listening skills
  6. Know how to practice listening and responding
  7. Understand recovery from mental health problems
  8. Understand the connection between mental health problems: Alcohol and Drugs, Discrimination
  9. Have an awareness of basic information about common mental health problems
  10. Have knowledge of self-help supports

Target Audience:

Targeted groups although some dates will be open to all.

Duration:

2 days.

Understanding Mental Health Stigma & Discrimination Workshop (Informed level)

Aim:

Understanding and tackling stigma and discrimination is foundational to all mental health and wellbeing incentives and workstreams as well as the provision of services. The aim of the workshop is to equip participants with the knowledge to confidently join a stigma free movement for change.

Learning Objectives

  • By the end of this awareness session, you will:
  • Know the difference between mental health and mental illness
  • Have a better understanding of what mental health stigma and discrimination is
  • Understand how it impacts people’s lives
  • Know why it is an important issue to tackle
  • Be aware of what’s happening in Lanarkshire to end stigma and discrimination
  • Have the opportunity to join the Stigma Free Lanarkshire movement for change
  • Know how to access tools such as signposting information and other resources, for example, Caring Conversations, How to Tackle Stigma and Friends & Family tools and campaigns

Target Audience:

All NHSL Staff at any level. This workshop is not only suitable for staff who have a remit for mental health as part of their role but for anyone who supports individuals or communities in any capacity.

Duration:

Approximately 1 and ½ hours.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)

Aim:

To enable caregivers to become more willing, ready and able to recognise and intervene effectively to help persons at risk of suicide.

Learning Objectives

The goal of ASIST is to enhance a caregiver’s abilities to assist a person with thoughts of suicide to keep ‘safe for now’.  By completing the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognise that caregivers and persons with thoughts of suicide are affected by personal and societal attitudes about suicide.
  2. Provide life assisting guidance to persons with thoughts of suicide in a flexible manner.
  3. Identify what needs to be in the plan for safety when working with a person with thoughts of suicide.
  4. Demonstrate the skills required to provide suicide first aid to a person with thoughts of suicide.
  5. Appreciate the value of improving community resources including the way that they work together; and
  6. Recognise that suicide prevention is broader than suicide intervention and includes life promotion and self care for persons with thoughts of suicide and for caregivers.

Focusing upon the role of ASIST caregivers in a suicide safe community, the goal of ASIST is to train caregivers who are willing, ready and able to provide life assisting, suicide first aid.

Target Audience:

Targeted groups although some dates will be open to all.

Duration:

Two days.

Trauma Training

Aim:

Children & young people’s mental health & preventing self-harm & suicide

Aim:

To help workers to understand the factors that influence mental health and resilience in CYP, engage proactively with CYP about mental health, self-harm, and suicide and recognise when to seek help to support those in their care.

Learning Objectives

Animation 1- What is Mental Health

  1. Identify ways to support children and young people (CYP), to have good mental health
  2. Recognise the signs of mental health in CYP
  3. Be aware of the impact pf poor mental health and mental ill health on school performance and achievement
  4. Be familiar with the positive influence of building confidence and self-esteem on CYP’s mental health
  5. Understand the importance of having at least one support, trusted adult on mental health
  6. Recognise that there are some situations, circumstances and experiences in childhood that can negatively affect CYP’s mental health
  7. Recognise the importance of showing you are listening and showing that you care
  8. Understand the importance of positive experiences, relationships and sense of belonging in building resilience and supporting CYP’s mental health
  9. Identify things that you can do when you are worried about a child or young person’s mental health

Animation 2- How talk about mental health

  1. Identify ways to talk about mental health with CYP
  2. Understand the importance of helping CYP understand confidentiality, its limits and information sharing
  3. Understand the importance of finding time and creating the right environment to talk
  4. Recognise when to refer CYP to appropriate services for support
  5. Understand the importance of developing trust being honest
  6. Understand the importance of listening and asking to show you care

Animation 3- Self- harm and Suicide Prevention

  1. Gain an awareness of self- harm in CYP
  2. Be familiar with some methods used to self-harm
  3. Recognise that self-harm can be about emotional pain and is often a communication of distress
  4. Understand the relationship between self- harm and suicide risk
  5. Identify ways to talk with CYP who self- harm and understand the importance of always taking self- harm seriously
  6. Understand the importance of asking about and talking about thoughts of suicide with CYP
  7. Understand that talking openly about mental health and suicide can reduce stigma
  8. Describe what it means to be ALERT
  9. Be familiar with ways of getting immediate help when you are worried about a CYP’s safety

Target Audience:

Staff working in health, care & wider services who support children & young people.

Duration:
