Health Issues in the Community Course (HIIC) from CHEX Community Health Exchange

Aim:

Health Issues in the Community (HIIC) is a course that helps people understand what affects their health and the health of their communities, culminating in community action.

Learning Objectives:

Topics covered on Part 1 of this course:

  • Different Ways of Thinking about Health
  • Poverty, Inequality and Health
  • Equity in Health
  • Social Exclusion and Social Justice
  • Participation and Power
  • Community Development and Health
  • Group Project

Target Audience:

Community members and community groups who want to better understand health, inequalities and be involved in making change in their community.

Duration:

Flexible. Each unit can be studied individually, or all of Part 1 can be studied, group presentation done and written work completed, culminating in SCQF certificate and qualification at Level 7.

Improving Health: Develop Developing Effective Practice Course (IH:DEP)

Aim:

To support learners to understand health improvement principles, theory and policy drivers in order to put them into practice.

Learning Objectives:

On completion of the course you will be able to:

  • critically examine concepts and models of health, health improvement and health promotion and show their influence on current practice
  • explain the mutual influences of social, policy, regulatory and legislative drivers on population health outcomes
  • appraise the implications of health improvement principles for reducing health inequalities and improving overall population health
  • critically examine own practice in relation to achieving continuous improvement in delivery of interventions aimed to improve health and reduce health inequalities
  • demonstrate personal use of a reflective process to generate experiential learning

Target Audience:

Multi-agency.

Duration:

15 weeks, half day per week; 8 Teams sessions in total; 7 independent study

Breaking barriers to reduce inequalities and demonstrating your impact on health inequalities

Aim:

Working through this resource will help you to take an outcome focused approach to planning, evaluating and demonstrating the impact of your work on health inequalities.

Learning Objectives:

On completion of the entire resource, you will be able to:

      • take an outcomes planning approach to tackling health inequalities
      • measure your impact on health inequalities
      • explain your impact on health inequalities.

Target Audience:

The hubs are primarily for those in public service roles (including health, social care, education, housing, police and fire and rescue services) across all sectors. It is also useful for everyone who works in public service as it will support action to reduce inequalities and improve population life outcomes.

Delivery Method:

The hubs are free and can be easily accessed by logging in, enrolling or creating an account on Public Health Scotland’s Virtual learning environment.

Cancer, Cancer Screening and Inequalities

Aim:

To raise awareness of the three cancers screened for in Lanarkshire (Cervical, Breast & Bowel Cancer) with a view to increasing and supporting informed uptake.

Learning Objectives:

  • Increase awareness of Breast, Bowel & Cervical Cancer Symptoms, Screening & Support.
  • Increase awareness of inequalities, their impact on screening and what we can do about them.

Target Audience:

Multi Agency.

Equality and Human Rights: Putting people at the centre

Aim:

This module will help you think about the meaning of equality and human rights and how they apply to our personal and work lives.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the module, you should be able to:

  • describe why equality and human rights are important
  • identify the main types of discrimination likely to happen within the work environment
  • identify the main causes of health inequalities and what can be done to promote equality
  • reflect on what this means for your role within health and social care.

Target Audience:

Anyone.

Duration:

1 hour.

Health Inequalities Awareness

Aim:

This module looks at a definition of health inequalities and asks a participant to reflect on their own practice, identifying what they can do to reduce them. The course includes four sections and should take around 30 minutes to complete.

Learning Objectives:

  • Introduce the link between discrimination, inequalities and health inequalities.
  • Introduce the causes and impact of health inequalities in Scotland.
  • Introduce the values that result in positive outcomes for people.
  • Promote a human rights-based approach to address health inequalities.
  • Support reflection of current practice and application of new learning into practice.

Target Audience:

This module is suitable for anyone who wants to learn about health inequalities.

Duration:

The course includes four sections and should take around 30 minutes to complete.
