Cancer, Cancer Screening and Inequalities

Aim:

To raise awareness of the three cancers currently screened for in Lanarkshire (Cervical, Breast & Bowel Cancer) with a view to increasing and supporting informed uptake of screening.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will:

  • Gain awareness of the cancer related policy landscape
  • Gain awareness of Breast, Bowel & Cervical Cancer Symptoms, Screening & Supports
  • Gain awareness of inequalities and their impact on screening
  • Gain awareness of what we can do to support informed screening uptake in Lanarkshire while addressing barriers

NHS Scotland National Screening Programmes

Aim:

To increase knowledge among target populations of the NHS Scotland national screening programmes and their benefits.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Describe what a national screening programme is
  • Understand inequalities in screening and barriers to screening
  • Know what you can do to support informed participation in screening
  • Describe the 5 adult screening programmes
  • Understand the signs and symptoms associated with each screened for condition
  • Understand risk factors and risk reduction for the screened for condition

Bowel Cancer Awareness Talks

Aim:

To raise awareness about bowel cancer. Talks delivered by trained volunteers, many of whom who have a personal connection to bowel cancer.

Learning Objectives:

During the talk participants will learn important information about bowel cancer, including;

  • Prevalence of bowel cancer – learn that it’s a more common cancer than people think
  • Signs and symptoms – learn about the most common symptoms
  • Risk factors – discover what increases your risk
  • Bowel cancer screening – learn about the NHS bowel screening programme and the importance of taking part

Target Audience:

Anyone who would like to learn more about bowel cancer & screening.

Duration:

Approx one hour.

Breast Cancer Awareness Talks

Aim:

To raise awareness about breast cancer. Talks delivered by trained volunteers.

Anyone who would like to learn more about breast cancer & screening.

CRUK cancer awareness training program

Aim:

To raise awareness about cancer.

Learning Objectives:

Talk cancer training will help you:

  • talk to people about reducing their risk of getting cancer
  • understand the key messages around cancer awareness
  • understand the importance of spotting cancer early and the screening programmes available
  • address the fears and barriers faced by people when talking about cancer
  • understand how health inequalities have an impact on cancer outcomes
  • have effective, supportive conversations about cancer and health
  • encourage people to take action for their health, use local services and see their GP with concerns
