Your local pharmacist can help

If you have a minor illness, a pharmacy is the first place you should go for advice.

There is no need to make an appointment and most pharmacies have a private consultation room.

Drop in and speak to your pharmacist first for advice on:

  • Allergies
  • Cold sores
  • Constipation
  • Coughs and colds
  • Diarrhoea
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Pain
  • Sore throat
  • Upset stomach

Your local pharmacist, or trained member of the pharmacy team, will give you advice and provide medicine if needed. Pharmacists stock a wide range of over the counter medicines to treat many minor ailments.

Pharmacy First is available from all community pharmacies and allows patients to access free treatment. Your local pharmacy can treat a variety of minor common clinical conditions without a prescription through its Pharmacy First Service, such as coughs and colds, sore throats, constipation, indigestion, urine infections, minor skin infections and impetigo, minor eye infections, emergency hormonal contraception and access to urgent supplies of medication. Please speak to your pharmacist.

All pharmacies dispense prescriptions and most supply emergency contraception on the NHS.

If you run out of your regular medicines and can’t get a prescription from your GP, your pharmacist can dispense an urgent repeat supply.
