NHS Lanarkshire is temporarily opening wards at Udston Hospital in Hamilton.

Patients who are currently in the Care of the Elderly wards at University Hospital Wishaw will transfer to the Udston Hospital wards.

This will allow the beds at University Hospital Wishaw to be used to treat patients with Coronavirus (Covid-19).

Maureen Dobbin, Clinical Nurse Manager at University Hospital Wishaw, said: “The aim of this move is to create extra capacity to help us accommodate people who require treatment and care due to Coronavirus (COVID -19).

“We are anticipating an unprecedented level of demand for acute hospital beds and this is part of our preparations.”

Unfortunately the current no visiting policy, which is in place at all Lanarkshire hospitals, also applies to Udston hospital. The aim of this policy is to minimise potential exposure to Coronavirus (COVID-19) to the patients.

Dr Ben Adler, consultant in older people’s medicine, said: “Patient safety and continuity of care are our priorities.

“The same clinical team – consultants, doctors, nurses and allied health professionals – will provide ongoing care from Udston Hospital. We will provide a seven days per week senior review service for patients.

“In addition, given the level of support we have received from our physiotherapy and occupational therapy staff, we will be able to deliver enhanced opportunities for rehabilitation therapy in Udston Hospital.”
