Surgeon Gavin Bryce is running the Berlin marathon this Sunday (24 September) to help fundraise for Motor Neuron Disease (MND) following the tragic death of a colleague.

Gavin, a consultant surgeon at University Hospital Wishaw, said:

“MND is a progressive life-shortening disease that can affect any age and can progress at any rate. Sadly, this was the case for a great colleague, Sandra Jardine, who was a dietician working with us in the Upper Gastro-Intestinal (UGI) surgical unit of University Hospital Wishaw.

“Sandra was a valued and integral part of the team and helped shape and improve the service. She was also a fantastic colleague and we all miss her so much since she passed away just under a year ago.

“Her diagnosis, illness and death happened at too young an age and too quickly. She was selfless, hardworking and her loss was not only a shock but was felt deeply by us all.

“She will always be remembered for being a great colleague who was dedicated to her patients and it is only right that something is given back in her name and honour.

“I am proud to run the Berlin marathon in memory of Sandra and to raise funds for MND.”

MND Scotland is the only Scottish charity providing care and support to people affected by the disease, as well as funding research to take us a step closer to a cure.

Gavin added: “We want a world without MND, so I’m fundraising because I want to help find a cure for this devastating disease.

“Sponsoring me will also help MND Scotland to provide practical, financial, and emotional support to people affected by MND.”

Sandra lived in Motherwell with her husband Graeme and their two daughters, Lucy and Amy, before her passing.
