People across Lanarkshire are being urged to take simple, practical steps to reduce their risk of falling – as part of NHS Lanarkshire’s activity during Falls Prevention Week (22–26 September).
Falls are a leading cause of injury, loss of independence and hospital admissions, particularly among older adults. many falls are preventable, and NHS Lanarkshire is highlighting small changes that can make a big difference.
Angela Scott, NHS Lanarkshire Falls Hub, said: “Falls can have a serious impact on someone’s health and confidence – but the good news is that many falls can be avoided with simple steps.
“Things like staying active, improving lighting in your home, removing trip hazards and checking your medication can all help to reduce your risk.
“We want to encourage people to think ahead and take action now – whether for themselves, a family member, or someone they care for. Even one small change can make a big difference.”
As part of the awareness campaign, NHS Lanarkshire is sharing daily tips across its channels to help people stay steady and safe. These include:
- Stay active: Regular movement, like walking or gentle exercise, helps improve balance and strength.
- Light up your home: Make sure all areas – especially stairs and bathrooms – are well-lit to reduce trips.
- Declutter: Keep floors clear of wires, rugs, and obstacles that could cause a fall.
- Check your meds: Some medicines can cause dizziness or affect balance. Speak to your GP or pharmacist if you feel unsteady.
- Wear sensible footwear: Supportive, well-fitting shoes can reduce slips, especially on hard or slippery floors.
The campaign also signposts to NHS Lanarkshire’s Falls Prevention Service, which offers information and support to people who have had a fall or are concerned about falling.
Angela added: “We want to help people live independently and confidently for as long as possible. Falls prevention isn’t just about avoiding injury – it’s about maintaining wellbeing and quality of life.”
