NHS Lanarkshire is rolling out a new campaign to offer any resident in Lanarkshire, who has been prescribed medication that involves using a needle or sharp, a sharps disposal container.
Sharps disposal containers can be used to dispose of medical supplies including used syringes, pen device needles, used finger prick devices, used forceps, scalpel blades, giving sets, pipettes or pipette tips, and used insulin pumps.
To make it easy for people to collect a sharps disposal container we have set up collection sites across our three acute hospitals which individuals can pop this week and next.
Staff will be on hand at University Hospital Hairmyres (UHH), University Hospital Monklands (UHM) and University Hospital Wishaw (UHW) in the main reception areas on the following days and times:
UHM – Monday – Friday 9am – 4pm
UHW – Monday – Friday 9am – 4pm
UHH – Monday – Wednesday 9am – 4pm
Diane Hunter, Acting Head of Technical Services, Property and Support Services Division, NHS Lanarkshire, said: “We are now making it easier for anyone who has been prescribed medication that involves using a needle or sharp to receive a bin to ensure that used sharps and needles are disposed of safely.
“These are available at our three acute sites or if anyone has a diabetic eye screening appointment booked over the coming few months, they will also be able to collect their sharps bin from the staff.”
Anyone collecting a sharps disposal container will also be provided a leaflet providing information on the management of the container and where to return them when they are full and collect another empty one.
