As winter weather takes its toll, NHS Lanarkshire is seeing an increase in injuries caused by falls.

In response, Lanarkshire’s Specialist Falls Service is offering advice to help everyone stay safe, particularly older adults who are most at risk.

Falls are preventable, and small changes can make a big difference in reducing risk.

Michelle Wilson, Advanced Practitioner Occupational Therapist with NHS Lanarkshire’s Specialist Falls Service, said: “One-third of older adults experience a fall at least once a year. While falls can lead to physical injury, they also have a significant impact on confidence and independence.

“These impacts can ripple into other areas of life, making everyday tasks more challenging and isolating individuals from activities they enjoy. The good news is that there are practical steps you can take to reduce the risk of falling while staying active and independent.”

Look After Your Eyes and Ears
  • Eye Health: During winter, lower light levels can strain your eyes, so regular tests are essential—annually if you’re over 60, and every two years if younger. Ensure your glasses are clean and fit well, especially as fogging in cold weather can blur your vision. If you wear bifocal or varifocal lenses, consider single-lens glasses for better clarity when navigating icy paths.
  • Hearing Matters: Winter weather can amplify hearing challenges due to cold winds or wearing hats. If you notice changes in your hearing, book a test. Good hearing supports balance, helping you navigate icy or slippery conditions confidently.
Foot Care and Winter-Ready Footwear
  • Healthy feet are key to staying steady, especially on icy or snowy ground. Invest in well-fitted, supportive shoes with non-slip soles. Avoid walking in socks or barefoot at home as heating can dry floors and increase slipping risks. If you experience foot pain, consult a podiatrist to address issues before venturing out.

Stay Physically Active

  • Simple exercises such as heel raises, toe raises, and chair stands can strengthen muscles and improve balance. Aim for at least two sessions of strength and balance exercises weekly, alongside 150 minutes of general activity. Check NHS Inform for exercises or join local leisure centre classes tailored for all abilities.
Create a Safe Winter-Ready Home Environment
  • Remove hazards like loose rugs, trailing cables, or clutter, and consider using non-slip mats by doorways where wet shoes may leave moisture. Ensure bright lighting in stairways and hallways to counteract shorter daylight hours. Even small adjustments, like securing carpets or clearing pathways, can make a significant difference during winter.
Use Mobility Aids if Needed
  • Walking sticks or frames can enhance stability but must be well-maintained and suited to your needs. The Falls Service can provide advice on the right choice for you.
Be Winter-Prepared
  • Carry a charged mobile phone when out, especially in winter conditions, where falls may be harder to recover from in the cold. At home, consider personal alarms or devices like smart speakers to quickly summon help if you fall. Ensure your home is well-heated, and keep blankets nearby for extra warmth.
Know What to Do if You Fall
  • If unhurt, try to get up slowly using sturdy furniture for support. If unable to rise, keep warm and call for help. Staying calm and prepared can reduce the impact of a fall.

Michelle added: “Our aim is to empower individuals to live confidently and reduce the risk of falls. By staying active, maintaining a safe environment, and being prepared, you can protect your independence.”
