Michael Breen has been successfully appointed as NHS Lanarkshire’s new Director of Finance.

Michael will join Lanarkshire on 1 April 2024 from his current role as Director of Finance with NHS Golden Jubilee. He will take over from current Director of Finance Laura Ace, who retires in May this year.

Professor Jann Gardner, Chief Executive of NHS Lanarkshire, said: “We are delighted that Michael will be joining us in Lanarkshire. His appointment follows a robust and extensive recruitment process.

“He brings with him a wealth of high-level financial experience. This is a key appointment for the health board at a time when finances across the public sector are challenging.

“We look forward to welcoming Michael. His drive and vision will play a crucial role in maximising the use of the resources we have in order to provide the best possible care for the people of Lanarkshire.”

Michael previously held the role of Vice Principal at Ayrshire College and also served as a Non-Executive Director on the Board of NHS Ayrshire & Arran, where he chaired the Audit and Risk Committee, held the role of Chair of the Integration Joint Board for Health and Social Care Services within East Ayrshire, and Chaired the Strategic Planning Group.

Michael said: “I am really excited to be joining NHS Lanarkshire as Director of Finance and being part of Team Lanarkshire. I am extremely passionate about working with colleagues to deliver best value in the NHS and I have a particular interest in service transformation that delivers high quality outcomes in the most efficient and effective manner.

“While there is a focus on the current financial challenges across the public sector, it has always been the case that boards need to make the most of their funding and take careful and informed decisions about how they use their resources to deliver the highest quality of care for the communities they serve.”
