NHS Lanarkshire’s is reminding residents that their Minor Injury Units are open for non-life-threatening injuries between 9am and 9pm every day.
People are encouraged to phone NHS 24 on 111 before attending a Minor Injury Unit. Those who do will be given priority over those who walk-in. Also, by attending between 9am and 9pm, people can receive faster treatment and avoid waiting in a busy A&E department.
Each of the three Lanarkshire acute hospitals – University Hospital Hairmyres, University Hospital Monklands and University Hospital Wishaw – has a dedicated minor injury unit within A&E.
Alan Krawczyk, a physiotherapist from University Hospital Wishaw’s Minor Injury Service, said: “If you’ve had an injury that’s not life-threatening, such as a sprain, simple fracture, burn, cut or animal bite, you can often be treated safely and quickly at one of our Minor Injuries Units.
“You should call NHS 24 on 111 first. They’ll carry out an initial assessment of your symptoms and they may be able to offer advice and treatment without you having to attend hospital in person. However, if it’s suitable, they’ll arrange for you to attend one of our Minor Injuries Units.”
Using the Minor Injury Unit service helps make sure people are seen in the right place, at the right time, and by the right team – while keeping emergency departments available for the most serious cases.
Dr Gordon McNeish, NHS Lanarkshire Associate Medical Director for Unscheduled Care, said: “Our Minor Injury Units provide expert care for a range of minor injuries. If you have suffered a minor injury, we ask that you attend a Minor Injury Unit during opening hours, 9am to 9pm.
“For those who arrive after 8pm, depending on the injury and unit capacity, we may offer a next-day appointment. If your condition is more serious, A&E remains available for urgent care.”
