Supporting patients to remain as active as possible while in hospital by doing activities that are beneficial to them is extremely important.

Active Wards is an initiative that aims to support people to be as active as possible while in hospital and encourages all patients, visitors and staff to work together to make sure this happens for each and every patient, where appropriate.

The initiative wants to ensure that everyone understands the importance of being physically and mentally active during a stay in hospital with everyone encouraging each other, and working together to take part in activities that are important to the patient.

In particular, visitors can play a vital role in encouraging patients to engage in an activity that they enjoy and the visitor could join in with the patient when visiting.

Claire Rae, Head of Health & Social Care South Lanarkshire HSCP, said:  “Engaging in activities that are important and relevant to an individual can support and increase their quality of life.

“Therefore, everyone needs to be given opportunities to do things that keep them occupied and mentally stimulated in hospital.

“Everyone has a valuable role supporting activity in ward settings including all people, patients, staff members and visitors alike. This will help people keep their mind and bodies active and support their wellbeing.”
