MAP of Health Behaviour Change: Helping People to Make and Maintain Behaviour Change Level 1 E-Module

Aim:

The MAP of Health Behaviour Change Learning Programme aims to increase capability and capacity in all health and care staff to provide psychologically informed behaviour change support to the people they care for. The MAP model can be applied to support a person to change any behaviour.

Level 1 interactive scenario-based eLearning package for use by all healthcare professionals. The MAP model to structure behaviour change consultations; Behaviour change techniques (BCTs) in consultations to support the person’s behaviour change.

This foundation level eLearning Module and Assessment can be completed as a stand-alone learning resource, or as part of one of the full MAP Learning Programmes. Should you wish information about the full MAP Programme of learning, please contact us.

The MAP of Health Behaviour Change Virtual Training Programme – Blended Learning

Aim:

​The MAP of Health Behaviour Change Learning Programme aims to increase capability and capacity in all health and care staff to provide psychologically informed behaviour change support to the people they care for.

MAP training provides tools to enable tailored, effective conversations about health behaviour change (based on Motivation, Action, Prompts & cues) that support and maintain new behaviours over time. The programme will support you to:

  • Effectively structure your behaviour change conversations
  • Decide which behaviour change techniques (BCTs) to use and when to use them
  • Use BCTs and existing skills with confidence

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the MAP programme, you will have developed:

  • Knowledge and understanding of MAP and how it can be used in practice to support people to change
  • Skills in using the MAP approach and the behaviour change techniques within it
  • A plan to embed the skills in your practice

Please Note: You will be expected to complete the pre-course learning before commencing this workshop

Target Audience:

Everyone! MAP is designed for all health and social care practitioners who have the opportunity to support others to make changes.

Duration:

Two half-day workshops with independent study and pre-learning (approx. 2-3 hours)

Training via MS Teams and pre-course E-Learning.

Health Behaviour Change Level 1 & 2

Aim:

It provides the background theory to techniques used in supporting change. To put this theory into practice it is recommended that participants undertake skills-based face-to-face sessions offered by NHS Health Scotland accredited trainers or through equivalent training offered by their own organisation or profession.

Learning Objectives:

Level 1:

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • describe what health behaviour change is and why it is important as an approach
  • examine the relationship between health behaviours, health outcomes and health inequalities
  • clarify your role in supporting health behaviour change
  • know the process of how to raise lifestyle issues appropriately and sensitively in a person centred way
  • support individuals to access relevant information or services local to them.

Level 2:

After completing this module you will be able to:

  • Define the links between public health, health behaviour change and health inequalities
  • Understand the underlying principles for fostering a good alliance and structuring a brief intervention
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the potential impact of social and cultural difference on the effectiveness and acceptability of an intervention for all clients
  • Identify a range of health behaviour techniques and understand their application to support change within individuals and groups
  • Reflect on your own practice, development needs, beliefs and values

Target Audience:

This module is for anyone who wants to learn more about health behaviour change and who has (or thinks they could have) a role in improving health

Duration:

Level 1: The course includes 5 sections and should take around 2 hours to complete.

Level 2: The course includes 8 sections and should take around 3 hours to complete.

Level 2: This module builds on learning covered in module HBC Level 1 and is part of a blended learning course in health behaviour change.
