GP Practices in Lanarkshire focusing on most urgent cases

The current Covid-19 situation is presenting GP practices in Lanarkshire with increasingly significant capacity challenges.

Following the announcement that the NHS is on an emergency footing for at least the next three months, NHS Lanarkshire recognises that it is not possible for GP practices to continue to provide all core services. GPs are independent practitioners and although service will vary from practice to practice, the focus is now on urgent cases.

Dr Alastair Cook, medical director of North Lanarkshire Health and Social Care Partnership, said: “The safety of our patients is always our top priority.

“GP practices will take steps as necessary and appropriate to protect their workforce and patients in a developing and unprecedented situation.

“In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic and the latest Scottish government advice, NHS Lanarkshire continues to work closely with all practices at this time to offer guidance and support, including triage process.

“If you or anyone in your household has a high temperature or a new and continuous cough – even if its mild, everyone in your household must stay at home for 14 days and keep away from others. Do not go to your GP, hospital or pharmacy. Go to www.nhsinform.scot  to check your symptoms and follow the specialist medical advice.

“Only call NHS 24 (111) or GP if you can’t get online or your symptoms worsen. Protect older people and those with existing health conditions by avoiding contact.”

NHS Lanarkshire is committed to considering measures that support GP practices both during in-hours and out of hours periods, allowing them to concentrate on delivering services whilst short staffed with increasing patient demand.

Innovative technology that will allow patients in Lanarkshire to have virtual consultations with their GP, for example, has been rapidly scaled up.

Instead of travelling to their appointment, patients or service users enter an online waiting area from their computer, smartphone or tablet. The service is notified when they arrive, and a health or care provider joins the virtual consultation.

Patients may now be offered this type of virtual appointment, where appropriate. The service is for patients with pre-arranged appointment times only.
