Following the publication today (18 March) of the Fatal Accident Inquiry determination into the deaths of Leo Lamont, Ellie McCormick and Mira-Belle Bosch, NHS Lanarkshire has issued the statement below:
Trudi Marshall, Executive Nurse Director, NHS Lanarkshire, said: “We extend our deepest sympathies to the families of Leo Lamont, Ellie McCormick and Mira-Belle Bosch.
“We sincerely regret the pain and distress these families have experienced and we recognise their strength and bravery in sharing their experiences during the Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI).
“We acknowledge the findings of the FAI which we will carefully consider to ensure that the lessons learned are fully acted upon.
“Following the reviews we carried out into these tragic events, we have already put in place a range of actions that align with the Sheriff Principal’s recommendations for NHS Lanarkshire and maternity units in Scotland.
“For example:
- A dedicated telephone within the Maternity Unit for Scottish Ambulance Service crews to use in an emergency
- New antenatal care pathway supporting referrals between midwives and obstetricians when risk factors emerge
- Critical alerts are now documented in the BadgerNet, the maternity electronic information system, to help all clinical staff to identify pregnancy risks.
“We will continue to work diligently to enhance our processes to provide the safest possible care for mothers and babies.”
NHS Lanarkshire is reviewing the full determination in detail.
