Appointment of interim chief executive of NHS Lanarkshire

May 26, 2020

Heather Knox

Heather Knox has been appointed interim chief executive of NHS Lanarkshire.

Heather, who is currently NHS Lanarkshire’s deputy chief executive and director of acute services, will take on her new role on 15 June 2020 from Calum Campbell who has been appointed interim chief executive of NHS Lothian.

Neena Mahal, Chair of NHS Lanarkshire, said: “We are delighted to appoint Heather as interim chief executive of NHS Lanarkshire. She brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and skills to the post, and made a sterling contribution as acting chief executive earlier this year.

“Heather’s leadership of our acute services has made a huge impact on our ability to deliver the best possible care to the people of Lanarkshire. She will bring the same drive, focus and commitment to her role as interim chief executive and I look forward to working with her in her new role.

“I would like to thank Calum for his dedication and contribution to NHS Lanarkshire. It is testament to his abilities and his excellent work in Lanarkshire that he has been asked to take on this interim role at NHS Lothian and we wish him well as he takes up new challenges and opportunities.”

Heather Knox said: “It is an honour to have the opportunity to lead NHS Lanarkshire at such a crucial time for the health service. Our staff have performed incredibly and shown amazing commitment to rise to the challenge of Covid-19.

“Further challenges lie ahead as we continue to respond to the pandemic and work on the recovery of our services in a way that is fair and equitable to all. I know I will be well supported in meeting these challenges by our Board, corporate management team and fantastic staff throughout the organisation.”

Heather, who was appointed as interim chief executive following a competitive internal recruitment process, joined NHS Lanarkshire in January 2015 having previously worked as NHS Fife’s director of acute services and the director of regional planning for the West of Scotland. She also has extensive experience of working jointly with colleagues across health and social care, including community, primary care, integrated joint boards and local authorities.

Heather joined the NHS in 1987 as a management trainee and holds a postgraduate degree in Health Administration and Health Research Master of Sciences at the University of Hull.
