Lanarkshire sits in the heart of central Scotland. ‎It covers 4,732 square kilometres, with a mix of urban and rural communities, and has a population of almost 655,000 – the second largest populated region in Scotland.

Transport links

Three of Scotland’s international airports are located less than an hour away and there are direct links to the UK’s main rail lines. Lanarkshire also lies at the heart of Scotland’s motorway network, with the M80 northbound, the M74 southbound and the M8 connecting the east and west of the country all running through the region.

Cultural Lanarkshire

Lanarkshire is full of cultural activities and events with numerous museums and entertainment venues such as Motherwell Concert Hall and Theatre, East Kilbride Arts Centre, Rutherglen Town Hall and Lanark Memorial Hall to name a few. Lanarkshire also hosts the Strathaven Balloon Festival and Beer Festival in the summer. The central location also provides easy access for major music concerts in Glasgow and the world famous Edinburgh International Festival and Fringe.

Education

Lifelong learning and education is valued in Lanarkshire and the region is proud to have award winning colleges and its very own university campus. New College Lanarkshire and the University of the West of Scotland provide vocational courses and a wide range of degree level qualifications respectively, supporting almost 40,000 students every year. South Lanarkshire College remains one of the country’s top performing colleges according to the Scottish Funding Council’s national performance indicators.

Quality of life

Lanarkshire also offers an excellent quality of life at a lower cost of living. The average house price is significantly lower in Lanarkshire than the Scottish average and more than 68 per cent of all residential properties are houses. Lanarkshire also has lots of recreational spaces with 15 town parks and five country parks, and is home to five nature reserves and more than 600 hectares of conservation areas. Choosing to live here offers an idyllic country lifestyle to raise a family and nearby access to the major cities in Scotland for days out.
