October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and NHS Lanarkshire is supporting the national campaign by encouraging staff to learn the signs and make time for their own health.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, affecting around one in seven women during their lifetime. Early detection is key, and regular self-checks can make all the difference.

Staff are encouraged to visit Breast Cancer Now for signs and symptoms, and to use the NHS Lanarkshire screening resources for information about cervical, breast and bowel cancer screening.

Lesley Mackay, Work & Wellbeing Adviser for NHS Lanarkshire’s Staff Health and Wellbeing Steering Group, said: “We know that NHS staff often prioritise the care of others, but this month is a reminder to look after ourselves too. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about knowing what’s normal for your body, acting quickly on changes, and making time for screening when eligible.

“There are excellent resources available, and we’ve also produced a short cancer screening awareness video as part of SHWB Week. Whether you share the information with a colleague or take action yourself, it all counts.”

The cancer awareness video is available on demand via the Staff Wellbeing Week hub.
