About Us
Healthy Working Lives (HWL) is a free NHS Scotland service dedicated to improving workplace health, safety and well‑being across Scotland. As part of Public Health Scotland, our mission is to help employers create environments where employees can thrive physically and mentally. This benefits individuals, families, businesses, communities and the wider Scottish economy.
Workplaces play a vital role in keeping people healthy and in work. Small, practical changes can prevent absence, strengthen resilience and protect productivity. Healthy Working Lives offers free resources, training and local expert support to help employers take early, effective action that enables staff to stay well, engaged and performing at their best.

A key aim of Scotland’s mental health policy is to encourage employers to support the mental health and wellbeing of their employees. Healthy Working Lives seeks to support individuals in organisations from a wide range of backgrounds and sectors across Scotland, to deliver the MHWT in-house for their employer.
The course is aimed at improving the awareness and understanding of mental health for those with management responsibility of staff. It will encourage improvements in workplace policies and processes to support employees who may be experiencing mental ill health in the workplace, helping them to remain in work.
The aims of the training are:
- To identify the key factors that contribute to a mentally healthy workplace.
- To give employers and line managers a broad understanding of mental health in the workplace
- To ensure managers are aware of their responsibilities in relation to supporting staff health and wellbeing
- To improve managers’ skills and confidence in dealing with mental health in the workplace
