People across Lanarkshire who receive regular vitamin B12 injections are being offered the opportunity to administer their injections at home, giving them greater flexibility, independence and control over their care.
The new self-administration programme is being rolled-out across Treatment Rooms throughout Lanarkshire. Eligible patients will be offered education and support from NHS staff to enable them to safely administer their own B12 injections, or have them administered by a family member or carer.
Patients currently attend regular appointments to receive vitamin B12 injections, which are one of the most frequently booked Treatment Room appointments. This new approach gives suitable patients the option to receive treatment from the comfort of their own home at a time that suits them.
Staff have completed specialist training and are now beginning to discuss the option with patients during their routine B12 appointments. Patients do not need to take any action and will be given information and support when they attend their next appointment.
The service includes comprehensive training and education and a step-by-step guide to ensure patients feel confident and supported before moving to self-administration. The patient information leaflet provides clear instructions on preparing injections, administering them safely and disposing of equipment appropriately.
Dr Veronica Rainey, Associate Medical Director, South Lanarkshire University Health and Social Care Partnership, said: “We know that many patients value the convenience and flexibility of being able to manage aspects of their own care. This programme offers eligible patients the opportunity to self-administer their vitamin B12 injections safely at home, following appropriate training and support from our teams.
“Importantly, this is entirely optional. Patients who prefer to continue attending appointments for their injections can do so, and anyone who chooses self-administration can return to staff-administered injections if their circumstances change.”
The initiative supports NHS Lanarkshire’s commitment to person-centred care by giving patients more choice in how they receive treatment. It also helps ensure Treatment Room appointments remain available for patients who require more complex clinical care.
Patients who choose self-administration will receive all necessary equipment and guidance, including education on safe injection techniques and disposal of sharps.
Patients who would like to learn more should speak to a member of staff during their next B12 appointment.
