NHS Lanarkshire is looking to recruit a Consultant Stroke Physician for University Hospital Wishaw.
Professor Mark Barber, Consultant in Geriatric Medicine and Stroke, said: “This is a great opportunity to join our progressive stroke service. We’re a research‑active service with a fantastic multi-disciplinary team and it’s a great place to work.
“This role is exciting because of the innovation we’re seeing, particularly in advanced imaging, thrombectomy pathways and the technology‑enriched rehabilitation hub at University Hospital Wishaw.”
The successful candidate will join a well‑established multi-disciplinary team delivering hyperacute stroke care, rehabilitation and community follow‑up, supported by immediate access to advanced imaging.
The Lanarkshire stroke service includes thrombolysis delivery, thrombectomy assessment, fast‑track TIA clinics and specialist outpatient services, with strong links to regional interventional radiology and community rehabilitation teams.
Having been awarded University Department status from Glasgow Caledonian University, the service has excellent partnerships with universities throughout Scotland and UK and is actively involved in multi‑centre and local research trials, supported by dedicated stroke research nurses.
This new consultant stroke physician is an NHS Lanarkshire‑wide role with a base at University Hospital Wishaw. The hospital has a dedicated 24‑bed stroke unit, providing care from the hyperacute phase through to discharge.
Dr Alison Falconer, Consultant Geriatrician and Deputy Chief of Medical Services at University Hospital Wishaw, said: “The new role will enhance the stroke service we already have, building resilience and allowing us to further expand and improve patient care across NHS Lanarkshire.
“There’s real opportunity for a stroke consultant who want to develop the service and bring new ideas.”
