ScotPHO provides key points on transport, providing policy context, data, key data sources, key references and evidence, as well as links to the national transport strategy and the sustainable travel hierarchy.
Department of Transport – road traffic statistics
The department for transport provides a map, summary and data downloads for road traffic statistics that can be filtered to local authority level.
Data is available on vehicle counts recorded on major and minor roads:
- Number of vehicles that travel past the count point (in both directions) on an average day of the year
- Number of vehicles that travel past the count point on an average day of the year, by direction of travel
- Regional traffic figures give the total volume (vehicle miles) of traffic across each region for the whole year, for each vehicle type
- Regional traffic figures give the total volume (vehicle miles) of traffic across each region for the whole year, for each road type
- Local authority traffic figures give the total volume (vehicle miles) of traffic across each local authority for the whole year
Scotland’s Census Transport Data
Scotland’s Census 2022 offers detailed insights into how people travel to work through statistical data and Census Maps, accessible under the education, labour market, and travel to work tab. It reveals how and where people work and commute, with breakdowns by age, gender, and geography. This comprehensive data supports policymakers, researchers, and local authorities in planning services, developing infrastructure, and fostering economic growth tailored to community needs
Road safety data maps
Road Safety data maps are available at THINK Map – THINK! & CrashMap – UK Road Safety Map
These interactive maps provide data that can be filtered down to a specific area, time, casualty type and severity and outside conditions.
Crash map provides a more detailed report, advance query options, analyse of route and print options are available at cost.
Local Government benchmarking – Roads
Statistical information can be accessed through the Local Government Benchmarking Framework Dashboards.
The Dashboard provides statistics on North and South Lanarkshire by service area.
The ‘Roads’ Service Area includes data on cost of roads per kilometre, percentage of class A/B/C/unclassified roads considered for maintenance treatment.
Traffic Scotland - nationwide live traffic information
Traffic Scotland collects and distributes real-time traffic and travel information for the entire Scottish trunk road and motorway network, through a multi-layered map.

North Lanarkshire – Community Hub maps & Active Travel Strategy
North Lanarkshire Councils ‘Discover Active Travel’ webpage includes: maps of active travel routes, paths, active travel hub and community hub locations, and the Active travel strategy.
The Active Travel Strategy provides data on transport context, existing active travel networks, future network visions, active travel network proposal mapping, proposed strategic, local neighbourhood and connecting network mapping, partner and third party active travel network mapping and active travel design standards.
