Brief

Purpose of the brief:

To provide an overview of the data relating to tobacco and nicotine use in Lanarkshire, what we are doing to reduce smoking and the impacts that smoking and vaping have on our population.

Tobacco ScotPHO Indicators

ScotPHO provides indicators relating to Adult prevalence, smoking during and post pregnancy, smoking attributed deaths and diseases, smoking cessation and services. The data can be accessed through the tobacco tab within the ScotPHO site. Trend data can be filtered down to council area on availability of smoking cessation products, smoking quit attempts, smoking quit rate at 4 week follow up and smoking quit rate at 12-week follow up. Deprivation data is also provided and can be filtered by patterns of inequality, inequality gap and potential for improvement.

Cresh provide a map of the UK that demonstrates Retail/Smoking Legends for retail density, nicotine vaping products only retailer density, tobacco and nicotine vaping products retailer density, tobacco only retailer density and tobacco density that can be filtered by year and data zone with a postal search option available.

NHS Stop smoking services annual and quarterly reports

Public Health Scotland (PHS) provides  STOP smoking annual statistical report & STOP smoking services Quarterly reports. For all annual reporting please select: see all releases link placed the right hand side of the page. The release is supplemented by an interactive dashboard and excel workbook that reports on health board data. They provide statistics on the NHS Stop Smoking Services, and their progress towards their Local Delivery Plan Standard.

Cessation, Prevention, Protection and Vaping Flash Reports

These flash reports provide data and for Cessation and Prevention/Protection. Statistical information is included on hospital referrals, smoking in pregnancy training for student midwives, training for pharmacy staff and engagement with individuals with mental health.

Young Person Vaping Survey

A Vaping Survey, commissioned by NHS Lanarkshire, was conducted by LANDED a young persons’ charity based in Lanarkshire in 2024. It engaged 6,901 young people aged 11–25 across Lanarkshire. The survey aimed to gather insights into vaping behaviours, perceptions, and the need for support among youth.

Tobacco and Vaping Programme Plan 2024-2026

The Lanarkshire Tobacco and Vaping Programme Plan 2024 – 2026 aims to reduce the overall prevalence of smoking to 5% by 2034, reduce children’s exposure to second-hand smoke and prevent the uptake of smoking, vaping and other nicotine products in young people across the population of Lanarkshire. The focus will be on reducing health inequalities in priority groups i.e. infants, children and young people, pregnant women and their families, people with mental ill-health, people who are hospitalised due to smoking-related conditions and people who live in the 40% most deprived areas.

Take a look at the key stats regarding smoking for each health board, and Scotland’s national figures are also provided for comparison. These statistical profiles were published using data from the Scottish Surveys Core Questions (SSCQ) to provide a ‘snapshot’ of local smoking rates (including smoking rates by SIMD area, smoking and pregnancy figures and NHS smoking cessation data in each health board).
