Purpose of the brief:

To provide information on the actions we have been taking in Lanarkshire to improve breastfeeding rates and to provide the latest breastfeeding rates in a format that is easily understandable.

ScotPHO children and young people profile

The ScotPHO profiles provides indicators for children and young people that align with the wellbeing themes of Active, Healthy, Achieving, Safe and Nurtured and in addition include indicators covering mental health outcomes, individual/family/friends relationships, the learning environment, community and structural determinants. The ScotPHO site allows reporting on trends, ranking, deprivation and population-groups, and supports filtering by health board, council area, and health & social care partnership.

Health in the early years (HEYS) Dashboard

The Health in the early years ‘HEYS’ dashboard released by Public Health Scotland, offers comprehensive, quarterly data on early childhood health indicators in Scotland. This inaugural release focuses on breastfeeding statistics—exclusive, overall, and ‘ever breastfed’—as well as developmental concerns identified during Health Visitor reviews at 10–14 days, 6–8 weeks, 13–15 months, 27–30 months, and 4–5 years. The data is presented by Health Board and Council Area of residence, facilitating localised insights. The HEYS Dashboard enhances accessibility with time series charts, comparative visualisations, and downloadable metadata, supporting in-depth analysis and evidence-based decision-making.

Quality prescribing for respiratory illness

The Quality Prescribing for Respiratory Illness  report provides a comprehensive overview of respiratory prescribing and outcomes across Scotland, supported by detailed data tables for each NHS Board. It includes a wide range of indicators covering prescribing volumes, treatment quality, medication mix, environmental impact, and inhaler-use patterns. Together, the guidance and accompanying data offer a clear national picture of current respiratory care and opportunities for improvement.

Teenage pregnancies

Public Health Scotland’s ‘Teenage Pregnancies Public Health Scotland Year of Conception report‘ provides a comprehensive overview of teenage pregnancies across Scotland. It reports on patterns in conception, birth, and termination among teenagers, highlighting variations across different NHS boards and geographical areas. The report also examines the influence of socio-economic factors, such as deprivation, on teenage pregnancy outcomes, and provides insights into trends over time. Public Health Scotland: Congenital conditions in Scotland

The report ‘Congenital Conditions in Scotland‘ presents official statistics on the prevalence of congenital conditions among pregnancies in Scotland. Scotland presents the first findings from the new national register of babies with congenital conditions, covering pregnancies ending in Scotland between 2021 and 2022. The report highlights stable prevalence rates across the two years and provides valuable insights into pregnancy outcomes and condition types, supporting improved care and planning.

Infant, Children and Young People’s Health Plan

The NHS Lanarkshire Infant, Children and Young People’s Health Plan outlines a strategic framework aimed at enhancing the health and well-being of young populations across Lanarkshire. This plan focuses on early intervention, mental health support, and collaborative care models, ensuring that services are accessible, equitable, and responsive to the needs of children and families.

By aligning with national health priorities and local community insights. Its “Where are we now” section provides a population-level baseline by compiling existing information on maternal, infant, child and adolescent health — drawing on demographics, health-determinant indicators, and service-use patterns.

Scottish Government Statistics and GIRFEC Charter

The Scottish Government’s Statistics and Research page  offers access to official data and analytical reports that inform policy and public services across Scotland. Covering topics such as youth homelessness, health and education the site supports transparency and evidence-based decision-making. Data is available on Data Zones, Intermediate Zones, and Output Areas. To find the reports on children, click on ‘Topic’ and select ‘Children and Families’.

Complementing this, the Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) Information Sharing Charter –  Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) Information Sharing Charter – Children and Young People outlines clear guidelines for sharing and protecting personal information about children in Scotland. It emphasizes transparency, consent, and privacy, empowering children aged 12 and over to manage their data rights. The charter reinforces Scotland’s commitment to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of children by involving them and their families in decisions about information sharing.

Local Government benchmarking – Vulnerable Children

Statistical information can be accessed through the Local Government Benchmarking Framework Dashboards. The Dashboard provides statistics on North and South Lanarkshire by service area. The ‘Vulnerable children’ Service Area includes data on school attendance rates, literacy attainment gap, and proportion of children being looked after in the community.

Mental Health Inpatient Census 2023

The data provides an annual snapshot of who is receiving specialist child and adolescent mental-health inpatient care in Scotland, It offers a high-level picture of children and young people treated in NHS facilities, broken down by health board. It supports policy development and service planning by providing validated, Official Statistics on admission patterns, ward use, referral routes and clinical need.

Childhood Immunisation Statistics Scotland – March 2025

Public Health Scotland provides Childhood Immunisation Statistics  by quarterly and annual update on childhood immunisation uptake rates across Scotland. It reports data at the national level, with breakdowns by NHS boards and local authorities for children at 12 months, 24 months, 5 years, and 6 years of age. The report highlights trends in vaccine coverage, disparities by ethnicity and geography, and progress toward the World Health Organization’s 95% immunisation target. These accredited official statistics support public health planning and policy development.

Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration

The site provides the latest annual official statistics published by the Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration (SCRA). It includes multiple formats — a full online statistics release, a statistical analysis report, a local-authority breakdown, an interactive dashboard and downloadable data files (CSV). It reports on how many children and young people are referred to the Reporter (on care/protection or offence grounds), how many hearings are held, how many children are subject to protection or supervision orders, and how these figures vary by age and locality.

Improvement Services Map

The site provides an interactive tool to set and compare key indicators within North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire and all other localities. Data can be found on healthy birthweight, child poverty, Average highest attainment, primary one body mass index.

South Lanarkshire

South Lanarkshire Strategic Need Assessment

The Strategic Needs Assessment for South Lanarkshire HSCP  provides a detailed analysis of local health and social care needs. It covers population demographics, life expectancy, and health inequalities, alongside lifestyle factors like smoking, alcohol use, and mental health. The report highlights the social determinants affecting health, and patterns in healthcare service use. It also identifies disparities in access and outcomes, guiding targeted strategies to improve health equity and service delivery in the community.

South Lanarkshire Council Children, Young people and Families Joint Strategic Needs Assessment

The link provides access to the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) that sets out a comprehensive overview of the health, wellbeing and social-care needs of the local population, bringing together the latest evidence to inform strategic planning, commissioning and priority-setting across the area.

The accompanying Data Appendix provides the detailed underlying datasets that support the JSNA, presenting population, health, social-care and wider determinants indicators at a range of geographic and demographic levels to enable deeper analysis and comparison across communities.

South Lanarkshire connect council plan

The plan reports on how South Lanarkshire will focus on what matters to the people and the priorities they have identified. Focusing on three themes people, Planet and progress. From the themes South Lanarkshire reports on 6 outcomes, Communities and environment, Education and Learning, Health and Wellbeing, Children and young people, housing and Land and economy.

Children and young people public performance reports

Public performance reports – South Lanarkshire Council provides access to:

  • Children and Families Public Performance Report that outlines how the service supports children, young people, and families in line with key outcomes of the Council Plan. It includes performance indicators, inspection results, and feedback from service users.
  • Working with Communities Public Performance Report highlights how the Council and its Community Planning partners engage with communities to address poverty, inequality, and local priorities.

North Lanarkshire

North Lanarkshire tackling poverty strategy, towards a fairer north Lanarkshire

The North Lanarkshire tackling poverty strategy  report highlights the proportion of children in the area living in poverty, drawing on both quantitative and qualitative data to inform action. Quantitative evidence includes child poverty rates, youth employment and education outcomes, and benefit income secured. Qualitative insights capture youth engagement, the experiences of care-experienced young people, and feedback from community initiatives. The Local Child Poverty Action Plan complements this work by presenting detailed data on child poverty rates, economic indicators, capital investment, support programs, and welfare provision. North Lanarkshire council children’s service plan & Children, Young people and Families Joint Strategic Needs Assessment

The North Lanarkshire Council Children’s Services Plan supports children and young people to grow up safe, healthy, nurtured and able to achieve their potential. The Plan includes a summary of the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment in Section 5. For the full, detailed JSNA, the link to the full document is available on page 14 within the highlighted orange box. The JSNA provides data on population and demographic trends, birth rates and early year’s indicators, poverty and measures of deprivation.

The Strategic Commissioning Plan

The Strategic Commissioning Plan sets out how the Health & Social Care Partnership plans and delivers services for North Lanarkshire. The Plan provides data on population change, life expectancy trends, poverty and deprivation, along with critical public-health indicators such as the drug-related death rate and alcohol-related mortality.

The document also contains a comprehensive Strategic Needs Analysis, presenting data  on the needs of children and young people, covering mental health, Dental Health and immunisation uptake.

Children’s Scottish Social work statistics

Children’s Social Work Statistics – Scottish Government provides comprehensive statistical publications on children’s social work in Scotland. It includes data and analysis on looked after children, those eligible for aftercare, children on the child protection register, and those in secure care accommodation.
