MyCare.scot
– Our Digital Front DoorAbout MyCare.scot
MyCare.scot is part of a national programme called Digital Front Door, run by NHS Education Scotland in partnership with Scottish Government. We are working with health and care colleagues and users across Scotland to develop an online service which will change how people access their health and care information.
Scottish Government’s Digital Health and Social Care Strategy committed to people having greater access to their health and care data. MyCare.scot is an exciting milestone for Scotland, and the first step in transforming how we interact with health and care services. It brings care closer to home, behind a single door.
NHS Lanarkshire was the first health board in Scotland to go live with MyCare.scot, with a limited number of dermatology patients being invited to start using the service in December last year. Early results are positive, and more people are being invited to use the service, which allows people to:
- log into a secure account using ScotAccount
- check personal details, such as name, address and CHI number
- view forthcoming hospital appointments
- receive digital letters
- see information about medicines, allergies and COVID and flu vaccinations
- link to a directory of other health and care services.
As MyCare.scot develops, people will be able to do much more, like booking appointments and checking test results.”
We are developing the service incrementally, following guidelines from the Digital Scotland Service Standard. This means that we will launch parts of the service as they become available, and in response to user and system need. We are working collaboratively alongside service users across Scotland to ensure that MyCare.scot remains fit for purpose and useful, while also addressing specific system pressures.
MyCare.scot is an important step in the Scottish Government’s commitment to a ‘Digital First’ approach, but it doesn’t replace other ways of accessing health and care information. It simply offers people more choice of how and when they can find the information they need. In this way, people have more control over how, when and where they manage their health and care.
MyCare.scot will mean staff working in health and care spend less time on administration and more on care. It will help to ease delays and reduce missed appointments. It also supports Scotland’s move towards a greener health and care system, through tools such as digital letters and booking systems.
MyCare.scot goes live across Scotland in April 2026, with limited functionality. By the end of 2026, everyone will be able to use MyCare.scot to do the same as is currently available to people taking part in our limited launch in Lanarkshire. More functionality will be added soon after.
FAQs

We will develop MyCare.scot incrementally, which means we will launch the first version of MyCare.scot with a limited number of features, to allow us to test it and make sure it is fit for purpose. This is just the first step – working collaboratively with users and the wider system, we will add more features and functionality to MyCare.scot and roll it out more widely throughout 2026 and 2027.
The initial version of MyCare.scot launched to dermatology outpatients in Lanarkshire in December 2025.

Who runs MyCare.scot?

The first version of MyCare.scot launched in Lanarkshire in December 2025. Launching MyCare.scot to a small group of users as early as possible means we can learn what works and be better informed about what people want and need in future versions.
This first version is just the start. In time, MyCare.scot will be able to do a wide range of different things, offering people more choice about when, where and how they access their health and care information.
Your local Health Board or social care organisation will get in touch with you directly at the right time, to invite you to start using the first version of MyCare.scot.
Why can’t I update my information or book appointments?
We are developing MyCare.scot incrementally, so we can be sure it is fit for purpose and works as it should. We know that one of the main things people want to do is to use MyCare.scot to book appointments, so that’s one of our priorities.
In time, MyCare.scot will be able to do a wide range of different things, offering people more choice about when, where and how they access their health and care information. As soon as we are confident that the existing functionality is working, we will start developing the next stages of the service, including features like booking appointments.
How will my information be used and is it safe?
Your information will be protected by the same safeguards that exist for your health and care information generally. Only you and the people providing your care will have access, to provide you with the support you need. You can read more about the safeguards in place in Scotland’s health and social care data strategy.

You can read the first version of our Equality Impact Assessment, published in August 2023:
More information about the EQIA is available at HIS Engage – Digital Front Door: Equality Impact Assessment.
What if I can’t use MyCare.scot?
We know that MyCare.scot won’t be right for everyone, so existing channels of communication and access will continue to be available alongside it. We are currently researching other channels and working with colleagues to ensure that all routes are equally represented to allow people maximum choice in how, when and where to access their information.
Why doesn’t Scotland just use the NHS England app?
The NHS England app was developed specifically to support NHS trusts in England and configured specifically for their IT infrastructure. It also doesn’t cover social care. At the start of this journey, we looked at whether we were able to adopt or adapt their app but it wasn’t possible, because of our differing structures and requirements.
NHS Scotland has different policies, approaches and structures from our counterparts elsewhere and the digital systems each nation uses reflect the different natures of our health systems.
For example, the NHS app in England is underpinned by services like NHS Spine and NHS Wayfinder, which Scotland does not use. The services that feed into the app are also different, such as England’s electronic referrals and prescribing systems. We use the Community Health Index (CHI) system, which is not the same as the English equivalent.
We are keen to learn from the experience of other UK health and care apps and are working closely with NHS England and the other UK nations to share our work and encourage common approaches to maximise efficiency.
How is the NHS Scotland linking in with colleagues in NHS England on the development of the MyCare.scot service?
NES is working closely with NHS England on development of MyCare.scot in Scotland. While Scotland’s systems architecture is significantly different from England’s, we are learning from their development of digital health and care services and adapting technologies where possible.
When did the first version of the MyCare.scot launch?
The first version of MyCare.scot launched in Lanarkshire in December 2025 and will roll out into other areas of Scotland throughout 2026. A more detailed timeline for this rollout will be published by Scottish Government in December.
What are the details of the contract award for MyCare.scot? (supplier, cost, duration)
NHS Education for Scotland (NES) awarded BJSS a contract to serve as the delivery partner for their new MyCare.scot service. The total contract value awarded to BJSS represents the maximum projected expenditure, assuming all contract extensions are used and the demand for resources is fully met over a period of three years. As noted in this year’s Programme for Government, funding for the initial launch of MyCare.scot for the Financial Year 25/26 was costed at £12million.
The contract is for three years split into three 12-month periods.
How much is MyCare.scot costing and who’s paying for it?
MyCare.scot is funded by the Digital Health and Care Directorate of Scottish Government, with up to £12m funding agreed for financial year 2025-2026. Costs beyond this are dependent on agreement of a full business case by Scottish Government.
